What Are Permeable Pavers?
Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavement (PICP) allows rainwater to pass through the surface into an underlying stone reservoir, where it infiltrates naturally into the ground. Unlike traditional impervious surfaces, permeable systems manage stormwater at its source.
Why Richmond Needs Them
All of Richmond drains to the James River. When rain hits impervious surfaces, it carries motor oil, fertilizers, and sediment directly into our waterways. Permeable pavers act as a massive filtration system, protecting the James River watershed.
Richmond VCAP Rebate Estimator
Richmond homeowners can receive up to $14 per square foot for replacing impervious surfaces with permeable pavers.
Subject to VCAP board approval and funding availability.
Technical System Components
Open-Graded Base
12-36 inches of clean, angular stone (No. 57) creating 40% void space for water storage.
Woven Separation
High-strength geotextile that prevents clay migration without blocking water flow.
The Infiltration Advantage
Even in heavy Richmond clay, the stone reservoir allows water to disperse slowly, preventing runoff and protecting your foundation from hydraulic pressure.
Maintenance Realities
Permeable systems require vacuum sweeping once or twice a year to remove organic material from the joints. This ensures the infiltration rate remains high for 25+ years. Evergreen provides annual maintenance plans for all our permeable installations.
